How to Prevent Bone Degeneration

Many sources will say that bone degeneration is a fact of life, and it seems that way for many people.  Women have a greater risk of bone loss than men do once they reach the age of 50, but by the age of 60 or 75 men tend to lose bone at the same rate as women.  Bone loss is treated by an increase in the intake of calcium, and increased level of exercise, and sometimes with medication.  The big question is, is there a way to prevent bone degeneration in the first place?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes!  Of course, there are many who would say otherwise, but preventing bone loss can be done.  The key lies in getting enough of some very important vitamins and minerals.  Let’s take a look of them.  The first of these is the obvious – calcium.  However, our society is told constantly to drink more milk and supplement their calcium intake and still bone degeneration is a major problem.  So, while getting enough calcium is definitely important, it is obviously not enough.

Now let’s look at the vitamins. Vitamin D is known to improve the body’s absorption of calcium in the gut.  It also ensures that there is enough calcium and phosphate to make sure sufficient bone mineralization takes place.  Of course, so many people live in areas of the world that experience winter and long periods during which time the sun does not have the strength to help the body produce vitamin D.  There are also very few foods that have a supply of vitamin D, thus supplementation is necessary.

Another vitamin that is important when it comes to bone density is vitamin K.  In fact, this may be more important than vitamin D.  Vitamin K has long been known for its role in blood clotting.  However, vitamin K is also important in bone health.  This vitamin is necessary for two reasons.  One is that it acts as a cofactor in converting several bone proteins into bone-building proteins.  The other thing that vitamin K does is that it strengthens the bone by activating certain genes in the bone-forming cells of the body, which in turn ensures the production of collagen, a protein in the bone.

In addition to these vitamins and minerals, it is important to get enough exercise.  Don’t wait until you have problems to begin a good exercise regimen.  Explore the different ways to exercise and keep your body physically fit and healthy right now.  The key in having healthy bones is to ensure you are getting the right building blocks and those building blocks come in the form of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K.  Even more important is to start ensuring adequate amounts of these vitamins and minerals early in life, long before bone degeneration begins.
